The network of Ethereum nodes is distributed around the world quite dottedly, and 58.08% of all nodes are concentrated in Germany and the United States, as of today, March 9.
Of the 6806 nodes, 2559 are in the US and 1467 are in Germany. France ranks third with 380 knots. The fourth and fifth places are for Singapore and Ireland with 329 and 123 nodes, respectively.
Moreover, according to the share ratio, the distribution is also significantly concentrated: the whole world accounts for 41.2% of the nodes, and the USA – 36.92% and 21.16%.
Nodes in a network are understood as a computer connected to the Internet and working with an Ethereum client. There are three types of nodes: full, light, and archived.
- Ethereum archive nodes must process all transactions on the network and store information about all states. The presence of this mass of information serves as a repository for the entire mass of operations, including the conditions for the implementation of smart contracts. This type of node is often used for statistical analysis and system settings.
- Full nodes in the Ethereum network must also carry out the entire volume of transactions, but unlike archival nodes, their function does not include storing all states. Rather, they are aimed at securing the network, but at the same time they cannot be used to restore the entire history of transactions.
- Light nodes are similar to this type of node in Bitcoin, and have only a minimal set of data. Their use does not provide network security, but they benefit from ease of use and ease of use.
The dominance of Ethereum nodes in the developed countries of Germany and the United States goes hand in hand with the ability of these countries to create a suitable environment to support a full Ethereum node. While in underdeveloped regions, the concentration of nodes is much less.
This distribution of nodes calls into question the decentralization of the network, and at some point 25% of all nodes were on Amazon Web Services. Thus, the Amazon leadership could influence Ethereum, which is contrary to the principle of decentralization.
Ethereum has a lot of problems right now: it is a huge gas price, and the loss of many key partners, such as Tether, which is switching to TRON, and delays in the release of ETH 2.0. It is for the sake of solving these problems that a new update was recently announced – Berlin, testing of which will begin soon: at the end of March – April, and a full commissioning will take place in the summer.
